The core equipment overlaps across mead, cider, wine, and beer — but what you actually need to do with it, and when, doesn't. These are the differences that trip people up most when they move between beverages.
An airlock lets CO₂ escape during fermentation while keeping outside air (and the wild yeast/bacteria in it) from getting in. Bubbling airlock activity is a rough fermentation indicator, not a reliable one — always confirm with a hydrometer reading, since airlocks can bubble slowly even at a healthy ferment, or not at all if there's a leak in the seal.
Original gravity (OG) taken before pitching yeast, and final gravity (FG) taken once fermentation stalls, give you (OG − FG) × 131.25 ≈ ABV. This is the only reliable way to know fermentation is actually finished — airlock activity slowing down is not proof, since temperature swings and headspace changes affect it too.
Wine, cider, and mead musts often need acid correction — high-acid fruit (like pineapple) needs less, low-acid fruit or honey water needs more, usually targeting a pH around 3.2–3.6. Beer works differently: what matters there is mash pH (around 5.2–5.6), controlled with brewing salts or lactic/phosphoric acid, not acid blend, and it's adjusted before the boil, not the ferment.
Honey has almost no nitrogen for yeast to use, so mead nearly always needs staggered nutrient additions (Fermaid O, TOSNA-style) to avoid a stuck or off-flavor ferment. Grape must has moderate natural nutrients — some wine yeasts still benefit from a dose, especially on high-sugar musts. Beer wort from malted grain is nutrient-rich already; added nutrient is rarely necessary.
Beer is almost always carbonated — either bottle-conditioned with priming sugar or force-carbonated in a keg. Cider can go either way: still, or carbonated the same way as beer. Wine and mead are traditionally left still; carbonating them (a pét-nat style) means bottling before fermentation fully finishes and managing bottle pressure carefully to avoid gushers or breakage.
Every off-flavor complaint that isn't a recipe issue is usually a sanitation issue. No-rinse sanitizers like Star San need contact time (usually 30–60 seconds on a properly diluted solution) on every surface that touches liquid post-boil — this applies identically whether you're bottling beer, racking mead, or topping off a cider.

Purpose-built for cider rather than borrowed from wine or ale. Leaves more of the apple character intact than EC-1118 and finishes crisp and dry without needing much coaxing.
Metabolizes some malic acid during fermentation, which softens sharp fruit acidity — a real advantage on pineapple or other high-acid melomels. Fruity ester profile that complements rather than competes with the fruit.

Quick read: dedicated cider yeasts (M02, Safcider, Wyeast 4766) preserve the most apple character but cap out around 12% ABV. Wine yeasts run more neutral-to-fruity and tolerate higher alcohol, which matters if you're back-sweetening or pushing a stronger batch. Ale strains are built for beer's faster, warmer ferments and repurpose reasonably well for cider in a pinch. Lager yeast is the outlier here — it needs sustained cold fermentation (mid-to-upper 40s°F) that most home setups without a dedicated fridge or chamber can't hold, which is the real reason lagers have a reputation for being harder to brew than ales.
